Exploring Hanalei’s Chinese Heritage: A Two-Day Lecture & Workshop

Heart of Hanalei shopping center, red-roofed building.

Hanalei’s rich cultural tapestry is woven from many histories, and this January, the Hanalei Initiative invites the community to explore an important and often under-told chapter: Chinese heritage on Kauaʻi.

On January 16 and 17, residents and visitors are invited to a special lecture and genealogy workshop led by Professor Douglas Chong, Hawaiʻi’s preeminent scholar on Chinese history and culture and President of the Hawaiʻi Chinese History Center. This two-day event offers a unique opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect—whether you’re curious about local history or eager to trace your own family roots.

Why Did the Chinese Come to Kauaʻi?

The first day features a compelling lecture that explores:

  • Chinese migration to Hawaiʻi

  • Early Chinese settlements on Kauaʻi

  • The Chinese presence and contributions in Hanalei

Professor Chong brings decades of scholarship and storytelling to illuminate how Chinese immigrants helped shape Hawaiʻi’s social, cultural, and economic landscape.

Trace Your Family History

Day two is a hands-on genealogy workshop, perfect for anyone interested in researching their Chinese ancestry. Participants will receive workbooks and guidance on how to begin—or deepen—their family history journey. Whether you’re just starting out or have been researching for years, this workshop offers valuable tools and insight.
