Hanalei Residents Urged to Conserve Water Amid Ongoing Pump Failure; Princeville Residents Asked to Voluntarily Limit Usage

Hanalei

Kaua‘i’s Department of Water (DOW) is reminding residents and businesses in Hanalei and Anini Beach to continue limiting water use to essential needs only due to an ongoing mechanical failure at the area’s pump station. The failure, which began on April 4, has significantly reduced water storage levels and poses a risk of a full service outage if conservation efforts are not maintained.

Emergency repairs are still underway, with DOW actively working to secure contractor services and necessary equipment. Until repairs are complete, water use in Hanalei remains restricted to drinking, cooking, and hygiene purposes. Customers are asked to turn off automatic water-drawing appliances such as ice machines and irrigation systems and avoid nonessential activities like car washing.

Princeville residents are also respectfully asked to voluntarily curb water usage to help ease the strain on the broader water network as the Princeville Utilities Company Inc. (PUCI) — the private utility serving Princeville — is currently supplying water to support the Hanalei system.

DOW will continue to issue weekly updates through the Wireless Emergency Notification System. Residents are encouraged to sign up via the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency’s website under “Notification Services” and check the DOW website for real-time service update. For more information, contact the Department of Water at 808-245-5455.
