Kawakami

Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami announced today that he’s running for lieutenant governor — a major step from leading our island to representing the entire state.

For those on the North Shore, we’ve seen his leadership up close. Since taking office as Kauaʻi’s 11th mayor in 2018, he’s been a visible, hands-on presence through both everyday issues and some of our toughest moments.

His path in public service runs deep: he’s served on the Kauaʻi County Council (2008–2011, 2016–2018) and in the Hawaiʻi State House of Representatives from 2011–2016, after being appointed by Governor Neil Abercrombie. He’s part of a new generation of leadership within the Democratic Party, shaped right here on Kauai.

Now, he’s looking to bring that Garden Isle perspective statewide — something we don’t see often. It won’t be an easy race, but it’s a rare moment for Kauaʻi’s voice to carry further across Hawaiʻi.

No matter where you stand, this is a big moment for the Garden Isle of Kauai.
