  1. The Hawaiian archipelago spans 2,000 miles to the southwest of the contiguous United States, consisting of 137 volcanic islands. The eight main islands, from northwest to southeast, are Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and Hawaiʻi, the latter also known as the Big Island.
  2. It is the most isolated island chain on earth.
  3. Hawaii became the fiftieth state in 1959 and is the southernmost state. It is the only state that is not geographically located in North America or in the tropics. .
  4. Of the fifty states, Hawaii is the eighth smallest in land area and the eleventh least populous. However, with 1.4 million residents it ranks thirteenth in population density.
  5. Hawaii is one of four states that were once independent nations along with Vermont, Texas, and California and it is the only state with a royal palace.
  6. Hawaii is truly a melting pot of ethnic diversity. It has twice the diversity percentages of the second and third place states, and is the only state that has never had a white majority.
  7. Hawaii is one of the ten most visited states with more than ten million visitors annually. It has over 750 miles of coastline and more than one hundred beaches, which makes it the fourth longest behind Alaska, Florida, and California.
  8. Hawaii’s tallest mountain, Mauna Kea, rises 13,796 ft (4,205 m) above mean sea level. It is taller than Mount Everest when measured from the base of the mountain, which lies on the floor of the Pacific Ocean and rises approximately 33,500 feet (10,200 m).
  9. Honolulu has a population of more than 100,000 people and is the most remote city in the world, being 2,392 miles away from its nearest city in California.
  10. Hawaii is the only state to have never recorded sub-zero Fahrenheit temperatures.

  1. Hawaii hosts the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the world’s largest naval command, and 75,000 employees of the Defense Department.
  2. Hawaii is the only state to have a single, unified school system.
  3. The wettest spot on the earth is Mount Wai’ale’ale on Kauai, which regularly records between 600-700 inches of rain per year
  4. There are just 13 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet.
  5. The most southernly point in the U.S. is at Ka Lae on the Big Island of Hawaii.
  6. The tallest coconut tree in the U.S. is located in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii, standing 92 feet 5 inches tall.
  7. The State Tree is Kukui Candlenut.
  8. The State Flower is Pua Aloalo (Hibiscus).
  9. The State Bird is Nene (Hawaiian Goose).
  10. The State Fish is Humuhumunukunukukuapua’a (Triggerfish).
