Background on Churches on the North Shore of Kaua’i

Although Kaua’i is today multicultural and multiethnic, the influence of the early Christian missionaries is still very evident in its churches. The oldest church dates back to 1834 when New England Congregationalist missionaries started the Wai’oli Hui’ia Church in Hanalei. Two early churches were destroyed, and in 1912 the present church, now affiliated with the United Church of Christ, was built through donations from descendants of the missionaries who taught at the mission school from 1844 to 1866.

For decades the royal family of Hawaii did not allow Roman Catholic Mass to be celebrated in Hawaii. But in 1839 the commander of a French warship threatened attack if Catholics were not allowed religious liberty. Taking advantage of the new policy, Father Walsh came to Kaua’i in December 1841, and established St. Raphael’s Church, celebrating the first Mass on Christmas Day.
