Kaua‘i’s North Shore is a place of unmatched natural beauty—verdant mountains, pristine beaches, and a sense of peace that draws thousands of visitors every year. But behind the postcard views lies a critical challenge: limited access to advanced medical care. For the local community and the guests who come to enjoy the island, this gap in healthcare infrastructure poses real risks.
A Small Facility Bearing a Heavy Load
Makana Urgent Care (Princeville’s Urgent Care Clinic) serves as the North Shore’s only urgent medical facility. While the staff is dedicated and resourceful, the clinic lacks many of the essential diagnostic tools found in mainland facilities. As a result, both residents and tourists often face delays or must travel long distances for care that could otherwise be provided locally.
During peak tourist seasons, the population on the North Shore surges dramatically—often doubling or tripling. This sudden increase places an outsized strain on the limited resources available. The clinic was not built to handle the volume or complexity of medical needs that arise when thousands of people descend on this remote community.
The 2025 Makana Gift of Health Campaign
To address this urgent need, the local nonprofit North Shore Give has launched the 2025 Makana Gift of Health GoFundMe campaign. The goal is to raise $75,000 to purchase an ultrasound machine—a vital diagnostic tool that can help identify internal injuries, monitor pregnancies, and detect life-threatening conditions.
Every dollar raised will go directly toward expanding the capabilities of the Princeville Urgent Care Clinic and providing timely, accurate care for both locals and visitors. And this is only the beginning. In future years, North Shore Give will continue to raise funds for additional medical equipment and upgrades.
Why Everyone Should Contribute
If you live on the North Shore, this is about ensuring that your friends, family, and neighbors receive the care they need—when they need it most. If you’re visiting, consider how a stronger healthcare system benefits you directly. A hike gone wrong, a child with a fever, or a sudden illness should never become a crisis due to a lack of local resources.
By giving to this campaign, you’re investing in the safety and wellbeing of the entire community—permanent residents and temporary guests alike.
