Kauai Bus Addresses Many Problems
Getting around the North Shore of Kauai can be challenging due to limited parking at various beaches and hiking trials, the requirement for day-use entry and/or parking passes, waiting lines at bridge crossings, frequent roadworks and more.
The County of Kauai offers an inexpensive alternative and it is easier, more pleasant, and cheaper than you may think. The Kauai bus. This great bus services all the main routes of the island.
The North Shore route, known as Route 500, from Lihue to Hanalei, has approximately 24 stops. Pick-ups or drop-offs at undesignated bus stops is not permitted. The return route from Hanalei to Lihue is known as Route 400. Busses approximately every hour, starting around 5:30AM through 9PM.

Kauai Bus Riding Etiquette
Busses are air conditioned and equipped to accommodate persons with mobility aids as well as wheelchairs smaller than 53 inches by 33 inches. Bus fares range from $2.00 per trip to $5.00 for a one-day pass, with numerous discounts for seniors and children.

- Eating, drinking, smoking and profanity is not permitted.
- Passengers must wear pants, shorts, shirt or a dress and shoes.
- No animals (except trained service animals).
- No oversized backpacks, surfboards or motorized bicycles.
- Regular bicycles are permitted as long as there is a rack still open on the bus.

The Kauai Bus is managed by the County Transportation Agency and they reserve the right to deny service to persons whose behavior is abusive, disruptive, threatening, etc., to the driver, other passengers or to themselves.
